Musings of a mad builder

12/15/11  at 5:44 PM
Late one night, a conversation betwixt TotalLunar Eclipse and myself resulted in his penning this little essay almost instantaneously. Please allow me share it with you! -- Ceejay Writer

‘C 4 works most effectively.’ – Tensai Hilra

I remember my very first build, it was a pathetic little mushroom. At that time the fungus was the crowning achievement of my second life, I was most proud. My second build was an actual building so my personal graduation from flora to architecture was quite severe but as I stared at the little fish shack I thought to myself, ‘I can do better than this.’

Through the subsequent months thereafter I learned extensively what all the little tabs the build feature has to offer. In hindsight if I had known about Ivory Tower or other places that teach building I would have used those resources. Soon one build turned to several and my eyes surveyed the buildings created. From their construction one can clearly see the gradual knowledge accumulation with each build, each alpha glitch and more recently incorporating sculpts and mesh into the work.

I remember how difficult it was for me to take down my predecessors buildings, how each one, though its construction sorely in need of update, was dear and special and held memories of this or that… to me it was inconsistencies skewing the vision, dampening the growth of the city. That fish shack was the first to undergo my critical eye and I found great joy in turning it physical, then unlinking it, watching in great satisfaction as each prim scattered about the place. The grin couldn’t be wiped from my face at that point. What else should I deconstruct? The barn? Sure!

Steelhead has always been in a state of constant change, the more I learn and refine my building skills the more I want to tear what I’ve already done and begin again. Coupled with my wife’s tendencies to destroy everything she touches, we blended together explosives with the tear down process to make things easier. The town loved this as much as Las Vegas residents and visitors love when they blow up a hotel.

I remember our first explosive deconstruction, my wife and I kept it a secret altogether. The building that was to come down was the old Saloon. It was a beautiful white building with French Quarter style façade and decorative wrought iron archways. We parked a pirate boat on the waterfront pier and held a pirate party on the boat with, of course, massive amounts of beer and parrots on the HMS Jolly Pigeon. All the ship’s cannons were aimed at the building, and at the stroke of 8 we played an appropriate overture and the entire building collapsed. The shock, the amazement and the hysterical laughter made it worth the while. For a few days the building sat in its desecrated demolished state while people wondered what the fate of the building was, until something bigger and far more elaborate plopped down onto the ground and we of course had to have a party inaugurating it.

Steelhead is ever changing, and even residents and landowners are in a constant state of rebuild and retry and sometimes rebuild, regret, retry but deep down inside it’s the satisfaction of creation and seeing your own skills growing with each prim you place. At least that’s how it was for me. And even though I have destroyed half of Steelhead and started over again I still have fond memories of places long gone and builds no longer with us. But I am far more romantic than I lead on, deep inside inventory sits a tiny unusual and quite ugly little mushroom that could scarcely be given away let alone sold.

But that’s my mushroom.

No C 4 will touch her.

Tales of New Babbage, Vol. 1

12/7/11  at 8:41 AM

I am pleased to announce that orders are now being accepted for Tales of New Babbage, Volume One! See http://www.babbagefictionpress.com/ for details and links.

The Tales project consists of thirty stories between 600 and 7,500 words, all by Babbage authors. Some of the pieces have previously appeared in online form, but none have been in print. Initial funding was provided by Babbage residents and steampunk enthusiasts through a Kickstarter project, and all copy-editing and typesetting was provided by volunteers. Proceeds from the project will be contributed to Clockwinder Tenk to help offset the cost of running the City.

We're doing an initial print run of 100 units so we can offer them at cost to Babbagers for the holidays: $8.95 each. (Google Checkout will add shipping based on where you live.) That order should arrive the week of December 12, at which point we will turn around and fill any orders we've received.

You can also order it directly from Lulu or Amazon beginning December 12 - eReader versions should be available at about the same time. The price, however, will probably be significantly higher. We'll update this space with details as they become available.

CONTRIBUTORS AND KICKSTARTER PROJECT SUPPORTERS: your copies will be sent out when we receive the first shipment, so please only order extra copies.

Volume One includes pieces from the following contributors:

A.E. Cleanslate, Abbey Hood, Arconus Arkright, Bela Lubezki, Blackberry Harvey, Ceejay Writer, Dr. Darien Mason, DreddPirate Bob, Elleon Bergamasco, Emerson Lighthouse, Jedburgh Dagger, Jimmy Branagh, Jonathon Spires, Junie Ginsburg, Leo E. Goubeaux, Magdalena Kamenev, Phineas Frakture, Salazar Jack, Sarah Heiner, Scottie Melnik, Serafina Puchkina and Tinus Koskinen.

Report from the Fleet Week

  at 2:01 AM
2011 Fleet Week of the Steamlands

Another spectacular fleet week has come and gone, providing much fun for all the people of the Steamlands and beyond. Almost all the nations have been part of at least one event and everybody looked happy in the end.

The week opened on Sunday the 13th with the opening Ball at the Fleet Week Headquartes of En Garden Island, in Winterfell Anodyne. It was a great event, organized by her bunnyness, Miss Eilidh McCullough, and with Miss Soliel Snook DJ'ing.  Over 50 people showed up, and we cannot forget the Armada Scoundrels who  sailed in on a barge while making quite a racket with their steam powered marching band for everybody enjoyiment.

2011 Fleet Week of the Steamlands

The same day the Shipbuilder Exhibit opened. It was simply amazing. Mr. Marcel Ghostraven assembled the most fantastic group of gifted creators of Steamers, Ironclads, Airship, Sailing Vessels and Submarines. Some of the vessels presented were previews of new products or were made available on the market during the days of the exhibit.

2011 Fleet Week of the Steamlands

Among so many vessels, I'd like to mention Victor Morington's impressive replica of the SS Great Britain, a steamer with 5 schooner-rigged masts, spanning almost 100 m.

2011 Fleet Week of the Steamlands

On Thursday the Shipbuilder Exhibit area, that extended to Winterfell Laudanum, Winterfell Absinthe and Winterfell Eventide, saw an impromptu party among the ships, with Miss Patty Poppy DJ'ing.

The Battles

This year we had two fighting events: the Sailships Battle, that premiered at the fleet week for the first time, on Tuesday and the classical Ironclads Battle on Thursday. Sir Cee Edman and Litta Nightfire were in charge of both events.

Sailships Battle

The pirate nation of Fair Winds dominated the sailships event, with Uante Viper who won both battles and  Evvva Viper who sunk Uante in an aftermatch.

Ironclads Battle

In the Ironclads Battle the Caledon Imperial Navy (Wrath Constantine, Rachire Andel and Geoffrey Xenobuilder) won the day and the New Toulouse Corsairs made the news with their fleet of one man little ironclads. They gave a hell of a fight and Gabrielle Riel got an honorable mention for being a die harder as one can be !

The Fleet Review

Traditionally the peak of the week, the navies of the different nations show themselves at their best to the cheering crowds. This year's event, mastered by Lady Oriella Charik saw the navies of Armanda, the DeS Confederacy, New Babbage, New Toulouse and Winterfell, sailing in formation on the review field in Winterfell Libris and Winterfell Undertow.

2011 Fleet Week of the Steamlsnds

After the Review, the nation of New Toulouse offered a ball to all the fleet week's participants aboard a beautiful paddle steamer.

The Shipbuilders Awards

With such a terrific exhibit and everybody deserved to be a winner. Many difficult decisions and the voting has been spread on very many names.

Here are the results:

Submarine Class

A battle to the last vote between Jenne Dibou’s Barracuda and Ford Denja’s Leviathon. Both have collected also vote for best overall ship of the Fleet Week and were clearly very much loved.

At the end … for just one vote ...
  • Jenne Dibou’s Barracuda gets the shipbuilder’s award
  • Ford Denja’s Leviathon gets a well deserved Honorable mention

Airship Class

Clearly Jenne had a great fleet week because …

Jenne Dibou’s MTF Baloon wins the Shipbuilders Award
Lexx Bondard’s Airship Aurora get a honorable mention

Ironclads and Steamers

A most fought class … many vessels got votes and many more deserved to be awarded. But at the end one came on top and …

  • Sidney Arctor’s Monitor gets the Shipbuilder Award
Honorable mentions go to

  • Loken Jewell’s Stingray
  • Aeolus Cleanslate’s Clockwinder’s Postulate

Sailship Class

This class saw three ships coming with the same number of votes, while a fourth builder got more votes than the others but spread on many ships, so four honorable mentions are awarded :

  • Marcel Ghostraven for his Golden Dragon
  • Razi Soyinka for Drakwenwerke Alliance Class Frigate
  • Mean Martina (Martina Lawsey) for her Black Pearl
  • and Evvva Viper for her Grand Galleon, Goelette and Schebeq

and last but not least ...

… roll of drums …

The 2011 overall Shipbuilder’s Award in the Third Fleet Week of the Steamlands goes to ….

Jenne Dibou’s for her Steam Barracuda !!!

The Races

The Races traditionally take place on the closing day of the Fleet Week, just hours before the closing ball. Wildstar Beaumont supervised the races, with the assistance of Oriella Charik and Tai Galicia as field officers.

Tall Ships Race

Robin Spocket , from the Armada Scoundrels was the winner, in front of Admiral Bridget Jennings, from Antiquity

2011 Fleet Week of the Steamlands

Submarines Race

The winner was Kimika Ying who terminated ahead of Jimmy Branagh is an incredibly fast final, both representing New Babbage

2011 Fleet Week of the Steamlands

The Uniform Ball

The tradition wants the fleet week to close at Piermont in New Babbage, with the Uniform Ball. This year it was definitely a blast with a confirmed attendance in the 70s and unconfirmed reports that more than 80 people have been spotted at the ballroom.

A Winterfell favorite: Engrama slowly melts into the world with their moody and atmospheric sound-scapes. Announcing Æther Salon: The Second Edition

10/13/11  at 7:55 AM

What is 'Salon'? According to Dictionary.com it is:

salon [suh-lon; Fr. sa-lawn]

1. a drawing room or reception room in a large house.
2. an assembly of guests in such a room, especially an assembly, common during the 17th and 18th centuries, consisting of the leaders in society, art, politics, etc.
3. a hall or place used for the exhibition of works of art.
4. a shop, business, or department of a store offering a specific product or service, especially one catering to a fashionable clientele: a dress salon; a hair salon.
5. ( initial capital letter ) (in France) a. the Salon, an annual exhibition of works of art by living artists, originally held at the Salon d'Apollon: it became, during the 19th century, the focal point of artistic controversy and was identified with academicism and official hostility to progress in art. b. a national exhibition of works of art by living artists: Salon des Refusés; Salon des Indépendants.

We may extract bits and pieces of those definitions to answer an even more burning question: What is 'the Aether Salon'?

The Aether Salon has, in its illustrious past, attracted speakers from all over the Steamlands to gather on the third Sunday of each month in its iconic building in the City/State of New Babbage. These interesting, talented, or sometimes simply lunatical speakers have enthralled and educated rapt audiences for an amazing 28 month run under the original ownership. The final 'first edition' Salon in August, 2011, ended with the unfortunate destruction of the building in a freak explosion, something quite rare in New Babbage.

But the Aether Salon is returning, now under new management, but quite respectful of the reputation and history of the Aether Salon. Soon, you shall again be able to soak up the knowledge and wisdom of a fresh crop of Salon speakers.

Or - shall you be amongst the speakers? Think upon it. What is your passion in life? What knowledge do you have to impart? Might your topic be suitable for the Salon? If you are able to put your passion into words, please contact Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander inworld) and describe your chosen topic.

The first 'second edition' Salon shall be Sunday, October 16th at 2 pm SLT as is usual; it will be celebrating the Anniversary of the Salon as a whole. All former speakers are requested and urged to attend (please wear your sashes if possible). The unveiling of the model of the new Salon building will also take place, so the first regular speaker of the new season will present in an eyecatching venue on November 20th.

Please join the Aether Salon group, free of charge, for notices of upcoming sittings.

Yrs.,
Klaus Wulfenbach, Baron
Manager, Æther Salon

Burlesque for Breasts! Tonight!

10/3/11  at 8:28 AM
The difference between burlesque and the newspapers is that the former never pretended to be performing a public service by exposure. -- I. F. Stone, December 24, 1907

Tonight, Monday October 3rd, 2011, at 8pm slt, in the breathtaking The Casbah of Steelhead Port Harbor, the Champagne Ladies shall be privileged to offer you entertainment and a public service. Please join us as we celebrate the playful side of life with our vintage style of sass and fun, titillating one and all for a good cause - Susan G. Komen for the Cure. We promise to do our very breast!

BoobieThon events will continue through October 7th! To stay 'abreast' of activities, a listing of all BoobieThon events is in this earlier Prim Perfect blog posting.

9/30/11  at 1:38 PM
The 4th Annual BoobieThon in Second Life starts this Saturday, October 1st (and in real life, so does the 10th Annual Blogger BoobieThon), both aimed at raising funds for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Over the years thousands of dollars have been raised forin both worlds.

In Second Life, a week of interesting, fun, and, at times, irreverent affairs for you to enjoy as the Saving Second Base committee members educate about - and raise money for - breast cancer research and treatment. You are all invited to join as many events as possible!

Please note, that as the BoobieThon is a celebration of all things mammary, some of these events are marked as MATURE, and there is nudity in some of the art on display.
